CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR
Some of you have been asking a bit for my Christmas decor this year, so I thought it would be just as simple to do a tour of our quaint little place all dressed up and cozy for the Holidays! I have grown up only having a real tree, and luckily in our place we are able to have a real tree, thank goodness, nothing can replace a real tree smell. The fragrance it gives is what Christmas smells like to me, not gingerbread houses, or hot apple cider and hot chocolate, but the Christmas tree. My mom was always decisive and knew what she wanted when it came to our Christmas tree, thank you mom! It is now engraved in my brain, except this year I think we grabbed a Noble fir instead of the Fraser fir, Fraser has a stronger scent, but it’s okay because Eric picked out the perfect tree, it almost looks fake it’s that perfect!
I’ve stuck to our original ornaments, I mean we are going only on our fourth Christmas together as the Grootenboers, so the ornaments aren’t old, but I’m still obsessed with them. We usually will add two or three new ornaments to our collection each year. My husband is very manly, and hates anything glitter, so we compromise, he can have his moose and deer ornaments and I can have my glitter snowflakes and pretty ornaments. Marriage is all about compromise and sacrifice, yes it is just a Christmas tree, but if you know anything about me, you know that I love decorating and I definitely pay attention to detail. So for me to allow him to give his influence on our Christmas Tree is a big deal. He has great taste, but doesn’t always see my vision for things, until I execute it and then he is all on board for it! But needless to say our tree is beautiful and our moose and sparkly snowflakes go together quite nicely!
When it comes to decorating, I like to stick to classics and timeless pieces. Again, if I had all the money in the world and could spend thousands of dollars on decor, I could easily do that. Home decor is such a fun thing to shop for and it is ever changing, and it’s always fun to switch up your home decor, but for me that is just too expensive and I can’t quite wrap my mind about spending money constantly on changing it up! So a lot of the home decor that I have is a couple of years old. Nothing is new for me this year, knowing that we are moving in a couple of months definitely makes the self-control a bit easier with not being tempted to buy new decor!
Texture is an other big thing I go for when decorating. Simple and texture. I used to keep my shelves full of candles and picture frames. This summer I decided to switch it up a bit with having greenery around our place, old books for stacking and timeless pieces that are cheap finds from the local thrift stores. So I didn’t change out a whole lot when decorating for Christmas, what I did was switch out my eucalyptus for some pine and evergreen. I also added my glittery and wood Christmas trees around my old books and pine and it gave it a great modern farmhouse vibe with lots of texture and natural elements.
I do love when homes are over the top with Christmas decor. Christmas is my most favourite time of the year, so you can never decorate too much and can never start listening to Christmas music too early! For me personally, I try to keep it simple, and mainly and truthfully because storing all of that in our tiny place is not an option right now, haha. So maybe talk to me in a few years when we are settled in a home to see if my Christmas decorating has gone over the top.
Happy Holidays,
xoxo Mara
